About Whitby
Self Catering Accommodation in Whitby

Whitby is a historic fishing port situated on the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast. One of the most delightful port towns in England, Whitby has a lot to offer to all age groups.

Whitby and its harbour are set in the ravine at the mouth of the River Esk and has a landmark in the dominant Whitby Abbey which sits overlooking the town from the cliff tops on the East side of the town. Leading up to the Abbey are the famous 199 steps or alternatively access can be gained by road.

Whitby has many narrow alleys and quaint streets all housing some exquisite shops with superb character. On the east side the cobbled streets stretch to the bottom of the 199 steps to the Abbey. Whitby has a busy town and quayside and can be enjoyed equally by those who want to relax and take in the sights and the history and those who want a more lively visit to Whitby. For the young adults visiting Whitby there are an abundance of entertainment spots for the evening including many pubs, clubs and restaurants within easy walking distance.

Captain James Cook is probably Whitby's most famous inhabitant and the Whitby Museum pays respect to this famous traveller with an abundance of historic memorabilia and information. Alternatively visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Grape Lane - this is where he lived and it is set in the style of the times when Whitby was the seventh largest port in England. Equally as famous locally are the pioneer photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe and of course Dracula - reading Bream Stoker's Dracula book you will read many references to Whitby.

Whitby is also famous for jet, a hard black mineral dug from the cliffs since Victorian times. Jet is fashioned locally into jewellery and ornaments which are on sale in many shops, particularly on the East side of Whitby.

Whitby continues to be a busy port and fishing trips and sightseeing trips are available throughout the summer months.

All in all Whitby is a beautiful town where visitors are welcomed in their thousands. Access to other places of interest is easy from Whitby including Scarborough, North Yorkshire Moors national park, 'Heartbeat' land in Goathland and the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway.
